It is easy to feel completely helpless in such times of political unrest. For those like myself who are not yet eighteen and couldn’t cast a vote in these past elections, it may feel like the world is unraveling around you with no end in sight. If you are eager to put your hands on deck—there are ways for students and adults alike to fight for what they think is right, no matter what viewpoint you hold.
- Volunteer in your community
Volunteering at establishments such as food banks, local and school events, or beautification projects is one of the most direct actions you can take to benefit your community, regardless of political standing. Although it may seem irrelevant to one’s frustration with the current political sphere, the first step to creating change is starting locally—which is often overlooked. A quick Google search can reveal resources to volunteer. Searching keywords such as retirement homes or food distribution can help you take on tasks that you are especially passionate about. For more information, the Abington service learning page has abundant resources for students. (https://www.abingtonsd.org/o/abington/page/service-learning-opportunities)
- Participate in protests
Abington’s proximity to Center City Philadelphia poses endless opportunities for a wide range of protests in the area. To find protests, social media is a great place to start. One can follow “Philadelphia protests” with whatever topic they so please, and show up with their family and friends. Protesting is one of the most accessible ways for minors to display frustration with legislation, as many large protests receive media coverage. Those large masses of people show that every individual voice matters more than ever.
