Hamtramck

Hamtramck

We’ve been fighting for gay rights in America even before Stonewall and we’ve made massive leaps when it comes to progress. However, the rights of gay U.S. citizens have always been in jeopardy, and Hamtamck just reminds the gay community that their fight for equality is far from over.

Hamtramck, Michigan was widely known as the first place in the U.S. to have an all-Muslim city council. However within days they’d be on the news, not for this unusual council composition, but for what the council did. June 13th, 2023 was a horrid day for the gay citizens of Hamtramck. On that date, the city council announced a ban on all pride flags. Unsurprisingly, within moments, people took to the streets to protest the horrible decision-making of the city council. To this day, Hamtramck continues to be ignorant and “unaware” of their offensive decisions. Marches still occur today and the rights of all gay people continue to be in jeopardy, but this does not stop the community’s fight for equality.
