Held on the first Monday of May, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. This year’s theme is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”, the second part of last year’s “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” exhibition. Several designers and celebrities came together to show off their interpretations of the dress code “Gilded Glamour”, a reference to the Gilded Age period that extended from 1870 to 1900 in the United States.

Blake Lively

Personally, my favorite look of the night was worn by Blake Lively, one of the co-hosts of the gala. The custom, beaded rose gold gown by Atelier Versace was inspired by the architecture of New York City and complemented with matching gloves. Lively also wore a crown with seven spikes similar to that of Lady Liberty’s representing the seven continents and seven oceans of the world.

Later, the bow wrapped around her waist was untied, revealing a light blue train that symbolized the patina of the Statue of Liberty. She also switched out her rose-colored gloves for blue ones that matched her new train.

During the event, Lively shared subtle details of her dress, “This column of the dress, the lines in it are an homage to the Empire State Building. The draping on the side is for the tip of the hat to the Statue of Liberty, and this is the constellation ceiling of Grand Central Station”

Not only did Lively arrive in a stunning dress, she managed to pull off a dramatic transformation that exhibited the historical significance of New York City, proving that she will forever reign as the queen of the Met Gala.

Génesis Suero

Another one of my favorite outfits of the Met Gala was the 2020 Miss New York Génesis Suero’s dress designed by Lucia Rodriguez. Although she was not an attendee, the Telemundo TV reporter’s dress outshined the looks of several celebrities that might. In addition to being a beautiful gold tone, the beaded dress also perfectly matched the gala’s theme.

Taylor Hill

Taylor Hill’s satin blue dress by Sohee Park was definitely among the best outfits of the Met Gala. The long train was intricately designed—fabric flowers wrapped around the bodice and colorful flowers were embroidered on the train. Hill also complemented her look with over-the-knee boots that matched the blue shade of her dress.

Laura Harrier

For the Met Gala, Laura Harrier wore a stunning black ball gown that flawlessly satisfied the “Gilded Glamour” dress code. The dress was covered in silver designs and the bodice was shaped like a corset. In addition to the gorgeous H&M dress, accessories like the layered pearl chokers and black gloves ensured Harrier was one of the best dressed at the gala.

Thomas Doherty

While many men arrived in traditional black suits, first-time attendee Thomas Doherty wore a gray custom Dior tailcoat to the gala and accessorized with an emerald and diamond earring worn on his right ear. Doherty’s groomer, Megan Lanoux, explained that his look was inspired by Titanic’s Jack during the First Class Dinner scene.
