Last Friday, Travis Scott’s Houston concert at the Astroworld music festival left 8 people dead and hundreds injured. The sold-out concert hosted an estimated 50,000 people. Overcrowding, in addition to fans surging closer to the stage, caused several attendees to be trampled and suffocated. According to concertgoers and Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña, people in the front were compressed against the stage and unable to evacuate.

The rapper and event workers for the concert have been facing backlash for continuing the show despite paramedics administering CPR to several unresponsive people. Video footage reveals fans begging the singer and security to stop the show, however, Scott continued signing and completed his set. A livestream of the concert revealed Scott eventually pausing his performance as victims were carried off into an ambulance. When questioned later, he claimed that he was not aware of the severity of the situation.

Scott’s girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, who also attended the show, indicated that she did not know people were injured. She addressed the circumstances of the event on Instagram writing, “I want to make it clear we weren’t aware of any fatalities until the news came out after the show and in no world would have continued filming or performing.”

“I’m honestly just devastated,” Scott said in response to the tragic incident. “We’re actually working right now to identify the families so we can help assist them through this tough time.”

The eight people who died ranged in age from 14 to 27. The youngest victims were John Hilgert, 14, and Brianna Rodriguez, 16. Danish Baig, 27, died while trying to help his fiancée during the surge. Seventeen people were rushed to the hospital, eleven who were experiencing cardiac arrest. Officials have labeled the concert a “mass casualty” event.

Multiple lawsuits have been filed against Travis Scott, Live Nation, the company responsible for festival security, and other organizations involved in the event.

On Saturday, Scott released a number of short videos on Instagram. In one of the videos, Scott stated, “My fans really mean the world to me and I always just really want to leave them with a positive experience, and any time I can make out, you know, anything that’s going on, you know I stop the show, you know, and help them get the help they need.” He explained that he is reaching out to families of identified victims as authorities investigate the circumstances of the event.
