Movie Review of About Time
November 27, 2020
This romance/fantasy debuted in 2013 starring actors like the notable Rachel McAdams, Margot Robbie, and Bill Nighy. Directed by Richard Curtis, the mastermind behind Love, Actually and Bridget Jone’s Diary, About Time holds a similar feel-good vibe.
Splitting its filming destinations between London and Cornwall, About Time is about a family living up in Northern England. It follows Tim (played by Domhnall Gleeson) on his sad search for love. As he ventures off to London, he leaves his beloved, and slightly strange, Cornish family. Before leaving, however, his father (played by Bill Nighy) informs him of their family’s ability to travel in time. Getting used to this new reality of defying the laws of nature, Tim decides to use this ability to get a girl. He inevitably stumbles along as he gets used to a new way of living and approaching life and its problems. This movie is a tear-jerker, heart-warmer, and all-around great film highlighting the struggles of life but more importantly, how to approach them.
After I watched this movie, I was flat out crying. I felt enlightened with a new philosophy on how to live. They are generally a hit for me, but I’m speaking for the general public when I say romantic movies are a hit or miss. I can also confidently say that most people are lying if they say a romantic movie hasn’t left them feeling lonely with an unrealistic idea of love. About Time leaves the viewer with such a different feeling: a feeling of hope and content. This film is focused more on the philosophical idea of carrying out a meaningful life versus the cheesy love story of two unnaturally beautiful people. It reminds you of the importance of family and prioritizing them.
Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, and Bill Nighy lead a heartfelt, pure movie that is a definite must-watch. If you are sad, forget playing that Hallmark movie you think will make you feel better and turn on About Time to ensure a genuine, warm feeling. Easily accessible on Netflix, this movie is waiting to make your day.
