Harry Styles is the First Man to Appear Solo on Vogue

Harry Styles made history this week as the first solo male on the cover of Vogue in its 127-year history. Styles followed in the footsteps of his former One Direction bandmate, Zayn Malik, who posed on the cover in July 2017, alongside Gigi Hadid. Styles wore traditionally-feminine attire on the cover including a ruffled evening gown, a plaid skirt, and a big tutu, among other pieces. The attire was made by Alessandro Michele of Gucci and Chopova Lowena and received lots of criticism. Conservative media star Candace Owens advocated that we should “bring back manly men.” After receiving heavy backlash, Owens defended herself and said that she was “not sorry” for trashing Styles. On the same note, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro backed Candace Owens’ statements.

On the other hand, Styles received support from many. Alessandro Michele said, “he is the image of a new era, of the way that a man can look.” Thousands of fans took to Twitter to express their feelings, both negative and positive. Notable personalities that supported Styles include Trixie Mattel, Olivia Wilde, Bob the Drag Queen, and Jameela Jamil. Regardless of your opinion of Harry Styles’ wardrobe on the cover of Vogue, he certainly made history.
