Positions Album Review
November 11, 2020
On October 30, 2020, the long-awaited studio album, Positions, was finally released by Ariana Grande. The album’s lead single is “Positions” and it contains 14 songs total. In the past, Grande’s past songs have been known for sounding alike to one another. Last week, when I heard the full album for the first time, I was hoping that reputation wouldn’t appear in the album. I began listening with mediocre expectations, but ended up being amazed by her songs.
In my opinion, the song “Positions” was a bit of a dissapointment, considering that it was the single for the album. I felt like it was too similar to the other songs from the album when it should have stood out and been more different. Although it was a pretty good song, a lot of the other songs from this album were catchier and better.
My favorite song of the album was “Pov” because of its great melody and lyrics. I kept playing this song on repeat because it was so catchy that it got stuck in my head for a week. Something I really enjoyed was the great range in vocals and the use of multiple voices layered on top of each other.
Other songs that I loved were “Motive” featuring Doja Cat, “Safety Net” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, “West Side,” and “Obvious.” I highly recommend listening to “Safety Net” because it’s a great song to listen to when you feel down. It has a lowkey tune and melody that is different from the rest of the songs in the albums. “West Side” sounds somewhat similar to “Safety Net” and is also extremely catchy. “Obvious” and “Motive” were both very upbeat and sound like the songs that would play in a fashion show. They’re definitely the perfect songs to listen to and vibe with to feel more confident.
Songs that I personally didn’t like were “Shut Up” and “Just Like Magic.” They didn’t exactly “click” with me. Personally, I don’t think those songs are my type of music and it was difficult to finish listening to them because of how repetitive they were.
Overall, I thought Positions was a great album. Unlike Ariana Grande’s past albums, I picked out a lot of songs from this one that I will definitely add to my playlists. Although a lot of the songs sounded similar to each other, they were different enough so that I wasn’t sick of hearing the same melody over and over again. I ended up impressed with how well executed the songs were!

This really was, actually, a great album! I was so scared it was going to be like the other ones, too. But i was wrong.
