Día de los Muertos in 2020

Janae Kirmales Prouty, Writer

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that is especially popular in the Central and Southern regions of Mexico. It takes place from October 31st to November 2nd. Some of the traditions include creating altars of ancestors for remembrance.  Additionally, there are traditional dishes, photographs, flowers, and other symbolic treasures which serve as ofrendas (offerings) to those who have passed. Día de los Muertos is like a reunion to welcome back the souls of the peoples’ deceased family and friends.

If you have ever watched the Disney-made film, ‘Coco’, you would notice that Día de los Muertos brings the whole family together, which is difficult in today’s climate. Although this holiday is similar to Halloween, it is far more meaningful. Día de los Muertos is too significant in Mexican culture to be canceled. As long as everyone is social distancing, The Day of the Dead should still happen in 2020.
