Battle of the Albums: Fine Lines vs. Harry Styles
September 30, 2020
Whether you know the name from the band One Direction or you’ve heard his music on the radio, by now almost everyone has heard of Harry Styles. Ever since One Direction went on a hiatus, all five members of the classic boy band have split into their own solo careers; producing music, going on tours, etc. Harry Styles has produced two albums within the time span of his solo debut. His first album, titled Harry Styles, was released in 2017. The album contains ten songs, and is about 40 minutes long. Harry Styles’ second album, titled Fine Line, was released in 2019, contains twelve songs and lasts about 47 minutes. Like the fans of every other musician, Harry Styles fans around the world will pick their favorite album and listen to it on repeat. So, which album really is his best album, Harry Styles or Fine Line?
Some of my personal favorite songs from the Harry Styles album are “Woman,” “Sweet Creature,” “Kiwi,” and “Sign of the Times.” In my opinion, this album consists of more upbeat and mood boosting songs. For example, “Kiwi” is a very popular song from the album because it instantly begins with the feeling of a rock song. Whenever you need a song to dance around to or get you in a good mood, “Kiwi” is the perfect song from this album. The song “Only Angel” has an angelic feel in the intro, and similar to “Kiwi,” has a pop/rock song mix. Other songs on the album like “Meet Me in the Hallway,” “Sweet Creature,” and “Two Ghosts” are slower and more comforting with a rainy day vibe. My favorite song of the Harry Styles album, and one of my favorite songs by Harry Styles overall, is “Sign of the Times.” “Sign of the Times” is an outstanding song; it is perfect for when you want to cry, or just lay down and think about life.
In Harry Styles’ other album Fine Line, my favorite songs are “Lights Up,” “Cherry,” and “Falling” with honorable mentions of “Canyon Moon,” “Adore You,” and “Fine Line.” You may already know a few songs from Fine Line like “Adore You” and “Watermelon Sugar” because they are always on the radio. Similar to Harry Styles’ other album, Fine Line has a mix between slow, sad songs and upbeat, cheerful songs. “Golden,” “Treat People With Kindness,” and “Canyon Moon” are on the upbeat, cheerful side of this album. “Treat People With Kindness” is not only one of Harry Styles’ best songs, but it is also his catchphrase towards his fandom. Harry Styles believes that everyone should be treated equally with respect, and so he also made that song to explain how you can treat others kindly. If you were wondering what songs on this album are slower and more upsetting, then you are looking for “Fine Line,” “Falling,” and “Cherry.” Just like “Sweet Creature” or “Two Ghosts” from his first album, these three songs will set the perfect mood for a crying session or rainy day.
By now, you may be wondering, well which album do you think is better? Both Harry Styles and Fine Line are great albums, and my favorite songs by Harry Styles come from both albums. I think both of Harry Styles’ albums are similar in the way they were written. Each album has a few sad songs and a decent number of cheerful songs. However, I do think that the Harry Styles album consists of just a few more upsetting songs, but in a good way, so if I really had to choose between Harry Styles and Fine Line, then I guess I would choose… Fine Line. Although it has a slight advantage of having two more songs than Harry Styles, I personally have liked more songs on Fine Line compared to Harry Styles. If you are a fan of Harry Styles as well, which album would you choose? Come back next week for another round of Battle of the Albums!
