On Friday, March 14, our very own Science Olympiad Team (ASHS SciOly) competed in the Pennsylvania Southeast Regional Science Olympiad competition hosted at Penn State Abington. Among over thirty highly-competitive schools that competed, Abington fared well for its second year!
Science Olympiad is an extracurricular competition that allows a student to explore topics that may otherwise be untaught in school, boasting 23 unique events that pertain to concepts of biology, physics, chemistry, and engineering,
At the competition, ASHS SciOly had multiple competitor duos work together to earn titles of top ten and four even win medals for placing in the top five! These are as follows:
Forensics: Ayla Mahmood and Sofi Ebora (9th Place)
Anatomy and Physiology: Lydia Wang and Natalia Torres (8th Place)
Fossils: August Helmke and Will Blitchford (5th Place)
Materials Science: Ayla Mahmood and Maeve Hong (4th Place)
Aside from the events, attending the competition itself is an extremely valuable experience. Throughout this competition, members of the ASHS SciOly had the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals from other schools and even foster friendships. Regardless of placement in the competition, everyone who competed not only got the experience of taking/making a specialized test/build/lab but also learnt the importance of collaboration with their teammates. If you are looking for a place where you can explore different areas of STEM and gain knowledge about things that may not be taught in a high school course, we urge you to consider joining Science Olympiad!
Congratulations to everyone on the team who have worked endlessly on their events, and special thanks to Mr. Churley and Ms. Schwartz for their devotion to the club and for being such great sponsors! ASHS SciOly hopes that the team can continue to grow and that we can see some new faces next year!
