In the long list of clubs and activities available at ASHS, many may have slipped under your radar. If one of these overlooked clubs is the Quilting Club, I urge you to give it a second thought. This club run by Mrs. Vanassche and Mrs. Jedlinski teaches students how to make quilts and other sewing projects. The first half of the year was spent making stuffed bunnies for the children at Bethany Foster Care- work that was fun, fulfilling, and earned members service hours. From having the opportunity to go and choose your fabrics to finishing your first project, this club can truly give you a sense of personal accomplishment that many may not typically find in many other clubs. The environment and community of the Quilting Club is extremely uplifting and supportive, with fellow members that offer to directly help you if you get stuck between steps.
Our current focus is on making quilts for people in physical therapy. This project is big and requires members to take responsibility and commit to its completion. Having real obligations makes the club feel more grown-up. While other clubs have little commitment aside from occasional meetings, the Quilting Club not only has members use sewing machines and irons during meetings, but members also must take their fabrics home after for washing. The Quilting Club can help prepare you for responsibilities and commitments outside of high school, and you can use the skills that you learn on your own clothes and creations!
Meetings are held every Thursday after school in room A142, but be wary that joining is a serious commitment, and that it may be too late in the current year for new members to start a large project. If that is the case, keep your eyes and ears open for a chance next year to join this fantastic club!
