You may have heard of the school marching band; the Abington Marching Ghosts, or even of our Indoor Colorguard, but are you aware of our school’s Indoor Percussion? Reinstated just last year with only eleven members, the group performed its 2023 show Power, focusing on electricity. The show was performed eleven times throughout the eight Saturday competitions, a parent preview, and Wildwood semifinals.
The 2024 season is quickly approaching. There was a non-mandatory interest meeting held on Friday, November 17. Rehearsal officially starts on Monday, November 27th from 6-9:30 PM, and will continue to be held on Mondays and Thursdays at that time. We ask that anyone interested commits to two weeks of rehearsal before they make a final decision on whether or not they want to participate. The teacher sponsor is Gregg Rosenfeld, assisted by the battery tech, Tyler and front ensemble techs, Hailey and Miranda. Battery is the term for the percussion instruments that march, such as snares, bass drums, and tenor drums. Front ensemble (or pit) is all of the instruments at the front that do not march. The techs are the people teaching you how to play your instrument, since you do not need any prior experience in percussion to join. In February, we will start having competitions almost every Saturday, often lasting the entire day. In the first week of May, we have a four day field trip to Wildwood, NJ for our championships, which really is as fun as it sounds.
As one of the original eleven members, I can say with certainty that it was my favorite thing about the high school! I have made strong friendships with the other members, and we sometimes have “percussion bonding” outside of rehearsals and competitions, such as seeing The Super Mario Bros. Movie, playing Just Dance, or having a picnic. I came into this activity with zero percussion knowledge and came out with a new ability and new friends. I would recommend anyone interested to show up in the music wing on Monday, November 27th at 6 PM just to try it out. Who knows, you might just have the best time of your high school career!
