Snake has shaped our lives. Originally released for the GameBoy in 1990, who knew it would be so significant now, when every Abington student has their own chromebook. The things you can do in Spanish class are very limited, especially with the amount of websites the school blocks, but Snake will always be there for you. However, despite being so well known by everyone in the school, my guess is that Snake can’t be blocked because it is part of the google.com browser itself and not a separate website. Google intended it to just be an easter egg, but its growing popularity influenced them to add extra modes to the game in 20__. These modes make study hall just a little more fun, but some are better than others. Instead of doing physics homework, I played Google Snake Game in every single mode respectively to see how each measured up to each other.
- Peace- Can’t lose
It’s so terrible, it’s not even a game anymore, there’s no point.
- Lights- You can only see around your head and the apple
It’s the same as the normal game but you see less and it makes it hyper un-fun when you get a long tail. A travesty.
- Keys- You have to grab a key to unlock a box to get the apple
Again, it’s the same as basic Snake but there’s an extra step in getting an apple. It’s not any harder, it just takes longer. The definition of a bad mode.
- Slow- You’re slower
Slower= easier and boring.
- Ghost Apple- Eating an apple makes half your tail disappear for a tiny big
Same as the basic game but easier. Pointless.
- Cheese- the snake has holes in its tail that it can go through
Same as the basic game but easier, although it’s slightly less easy than ghost apple. Still pointless.
- Infinite- No walls but you can run into your tail from coming out of other sides
It’s novel just for how different it is, but it’s a little easier and a little more annoying than just basic Snake.
- Portal- You teleport to a marked location when you get an apple
It’s one of the hardest modes, but in a very annoying way. The idea is cool though and the challenge can be fun.
- Bad Apple- Every apple spawn, one will be a normal apple and one will be a gray apple that will make the Snake go crazy and usually lose when you eat it
On single apple, it’s pretty much just normal Snake, but just slightly harder. With multiple apples on, it’s more interesting but just a worse version of other similar modes.
- Boxes- Instead of an apple spawning, a box will spawn that needs to be moved to a specific location to get an apple
Boxes can be annoying because of how slow it can be to get apples, but unlike keys, moving the boxes to the locations takes a lot of skill to get efficient at. What makes it better than keys though is that getting good at that movement skill is fun.
- Flying Apple- The apple moves around, bouncing off walls like the DVD logo
Having to chase after every apple might be annoying to some, but its linear movement is very predictable and adds a cool level of depth to normal Snake without changing it too much.
- Bricks- Every time you get an apple, a block appears that makes you lose if you run into it
The obstacles made by the blocks make the game harder and more fun. It has the fun of getting good at making tight movements like with boxes, but you don’t have to do the annoying part of getting the box to the location.
- Two Heads- Every Time you get an apple, the goes to the other side of the snake
This is a better version of portal because you don’t have to consider where you’ll end up every time but you still get the challenge of having a sudden change in your position.
- Statue- Some of your snake breaks off and becomes a temporary barrier when you get an apple
This is the best barrier creating mode because the barriers naturally scale with the increasing difficulty, you know where they are going to be placed, and since the snake increases in size slower, it isn’t overly difficult with the barriers.
- Landmines- If your head stays in randomly spawning 3×3 areas for too long, you lose
The landmines are a cool way to have barrier-like obstacles without making the grid feel too cluttered. You can still go through them, but you have to be careful of where you’ll go next, adding some quick decision making that makes this mode exciting.
- Fast- The snake moves faster
Makes each round quicker so the grueling process of waiting till the game gets remotely challenging can occur, and like landmines, it makes the game faster pace which in my opinion, makes Snake more fun.
- Yin and Yang- you control two snakes on opposite sides of the grid with one follow your directions and the other following the inverse of those directions
This mode is very creative. It can be more or less challenging than basic Snake if you’re skilled enough, and you can get apples very quickly which is a plus in this case. Having to be careful of both snakes’ tails is really hard but makes you always have to give complete attention, which is all you could ask for from a browser game.
