At Square One: Abington Ice Hockey’s New Beginning

Sam Nemec, Writer

A blank slate, a fresh start, whatever you may call it, Abington Ice Hockey returns to home ice to begin the month of November with difficult tasks ahead. A determined team filled with the most seniors Abington Ice Hockey has seen in a single year is looking to end their high school career on a high note.

Senior Captain Ian Heydt speaks on the point of the upcoming season. “I feel with coming off of a championship last season a few people think we are going to walk in and beat every team with no problem but that is not going to be the case. This season is going to be a tough one, every team is going to be a challenge. I do feel though since most of our team is senior status we all play with that chip on our shoulder to want to bring home the trophy one last time before we part ways.”

With the deduction of the double A level in the Suburban High School Hockey League, teams such as Bensalem and Central Bucks West fuse with our level which presents new talent we have not yet faced.

Whilst losing Matthew Cholaj, a thirty point scorer netting two goals in the championship game the previous year, we gain junior Sam Abramson, proving himself in the first few weeks of practice showing coaches and staff he can compete at this high skill level. With the addition of assistant coach Eric Daley, the team continues to build and expand as a team on and off the ice.

One of three sports to not be school sanctioned by the IHSAA, Abington Ice Hockey players continue to sponsor the team throughout school with the addition of new student managers and recently becoming a part of the school announcements. Approaching puck drop on November second, players push out information regarding the upcoming season to attempt to become more known and involved during school hours.

Looking to establish the same dominant start the team kicked off to last year, Abington defeated Springfield 14-0 and Plymouth Whitemarsh 8-5 in its first week of the season. They face rival Wissahickon, a team Abington defeated in last year’s league championship, in the second week.
