Green vs Purple Grapes
October 24, 2022
One of the longest reigning disputes that have plagued mankind is the question of which is better, green or purple grapes? This is a debate that I’ve had with my girlfriend a multitude of times. She believes that purple grapes are better, while I believe that green grapes are the superior botanical berry. To be fair I do have my foot in both camps a little bit, because I do prefer frozen purple grapes more than frozen green grapes. However, in their base form, I will forever rather have green.Â
What is the difference between green and purple grapes?
We all know that green and purple grapes have different tastes and different colors, purple being sweet and green being somewhat sour. But let’s dive a little deeper in this. The scientific reason behind the differences in color comes from antioxidants and the production of anthocyanin. Green grapes are green because in short, they are a mutant. There is a mutation in green grapes that does not allow anthocyanin to be produced. Because of this, most doctors and nutritionists would recommend red grapes over green grapes.Â
Let’s get to the numbers     Â
In the U.S., the average price for seedless green grapes per kilogram is $4.01, while the average price for seedless purple grapes per kilogram is $4.26. This difference in price is strange because in general 52% of people prefer green grapes over purple grapes, leading someone to initially assume based on supply and demand that green grapes would be more expensive than purple grapes.Â
In conclusion, if you’re purely focused on health, purple grapes are the way to go, and if you’re trying to save a little bit of cash, maybe opt for some green grapes.Â
So I guess we may never know which is truly the better grape, and maybe that’s for the best. But really who cares- a grape is a grape.
Well, if you don’t mind, I’m going to have myself a bowl of grapes. Thanks for reading. Tell us which grape you prefer using this link below.

Green grapes are aesthetically pleasing to look at in my opinion, but I go with purple grapes.
