Why Shopping Small is Far Too Underrated

Olivia Lonesky, Writer

Folks like to complain that corporations are far too successful, or that they run the world, and yet lots of people are feeding the wealth of these industries every single day. What’s the solution? Shopping small or as locally as you can have lots of benefits that people are just unaware of. I personally shop through platforms such as Etsy to help the growth of small businesses, rather than greedy corporations that underpay their workers and overpay themselves. But that’s not all shopping small has to offer. You’re also making a creator’s day by choosing to shop from them.

Imagine putting a smile on the face of someone who’s trying their best to make it by, and then compare that to the owners of big businesses who don’t care about your individual purchase. Who would you rather your money go to? Hopefully, we have the same thought. The recent pandemic has especially brought the issue of shopping more locally to light because so many small businesses such as local mom-and-pop shops went out of business because they just couldn’t compete with the lower prices and convenience of chains such as Amazon or Walmart.

Thankfully, we’re no longer nearly as restricted as before, so it’s time to give a little love to local businesses that are trying their hardest. Stop by a locally owned gas station and buy a soda or two, go on Etsy and buy your holiday gifts from there – we have so much we can do, and nobody has the right to complain unless they’re doing something about the problem in the first place. If you want to gripe about Amazon being the “ruler of the world”, get other people to shop small first, and then we’ll talk.
