Favorite Fall 2022 Fashion Trends

Nidhi John, Co-Editor-in-Chief

Fall is one of my favorite seasons, mainly because it’s the time to rewatch Gilmore Girls and recreate Rory and Lorelai’s outfits. Fall fashion in general is superior, and I love seeing the new fashion trends that start during this time of the year. Here, I’ve compiled a list of some of the trends I’ve liked so far. Please keep in mind that I’m not an expert, and these are just my own observations and opinions!

Mini Cargo Skirts

Personally, I love the mini cargo skirts that have been popular for a while now. A newer style is the maxi cargo skirt, which I cannot get on board with. The midi skirts over the summer were cute, but when they’re cargo or even denim (which has also come back) long skirts, they don’t have the same appeal. However, I would make an easy outfit out of a mini cargo skirt with boots and a basic crop top or a knitted sweater.

Lace-Trimmed Dresses & Tops

Whether it’s a lace-trimmed cami, long-sleeve top, or dress, I love this style. The Y2K aesthetic has been making a strong comeback lately, so it’s no surprise that lace is “in” right now. I’ve seen many simple white lace camis layered underneath, but I also hope to see more people using a patterned top as a statement piece. These lace-trimmed tops and dresses also fit well with the coquette aesthetic that has been trending.

Birkenstock Boston Clogs

When I first saw the Birkenstock Bostons, I did not like them. However, I did also say the same thing with the Birkenstock Arizona sandals when they first started trending. I eventually came around to the Arizonas since they never went away, and I realized I might as well get on board with the Birkenstock Bostons early on. I think these clogs will be trending for quite some time because they’re comfortable (at least I’ve heard) and gender-neutral. While Birkenstocks in general will always somewhat remind me of ancient times (the company was founded in 1774, after all), they are versatile enough to pair with many different outfits.

Pleated Skirts

Yes, pleated skirts were a trend from last year. Yes, they are continuing to trend this year. But this year, they’re being styled a little differently. Many fashion influencers have collectively agreed that last year’s trends were similar to Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf’s wardrobe while this fall’s fashion matches Serena van der Woodsen’s style. For those of you who do not watch Gossip Girl: Blair had a polished, preppy look whereas Serena puts a messy, effortless spin on the typical old-money aesthetic. So, the pleated skirts for this year are seen in more laid-back outfits.

Suit Vests

Buttoned/suit vests also match this year’s “Serena” theme. Many people are dressing them down and using them to go with the messy, lived-in look. Last year, sweater vests were very popular, and while they aren’t out of style yet, suit vests are more in tune with the fashion trends for this season. I love the different types of vests people have been incorporating into their closets because they usually layer these looks, and it makes it more normalized to repeat clothing items but style them in a new way.

Chunky Loafers

A trend that came back this summer and is continuing into the fall is chunky loafers. I absolutely adore these, and I love how they can elevate any look. I’ve seen cute summer outfits with loafers, but I’m glad they are still trending because they match this year’s fall fashion. Many people also wear their loafers with leg warmers, which goes well with the “academia” aesthetic. Dark and light academia were very popular a few years ago, but I personally don’t think these aesthetics can ever truly go out of style.

Bomber Jackets

Oversized jackets have been very popular recently, and this fall, oversized bomber jackets are specifically trending. I love how many vintage fashion pieces have come back, and bomber jackets are no exception to this. They are easy to style for various occasions, whether you’re wearing a dress or a baggy street-style look.
