The Mid December Slump

The Mid December Slump

Emma Brown, Writer

What we are experiencing right now, is what I like to call the “hump day” of December…we’re smack dab in the middle, counting down the days until winter break and being bombarded with work before the coveted December 23rd arrives: the last day before break.

I’d liken this time to a tug of war match between the students and teachers:

The students are avoiding any work at all costs, our motivation has run out, and we are in desperate need of a break to refresh ourselves and discover that motivation again.

In comparison, the teachers are cramming every last piece of work imaginable into students’ schedules, in hopes of fitting everything in before the break. Now, this is done with all good intentions, teachers are aware that nobody wants to think about school during break, but as a result, they are speeding through what needs to get done, leaving students drowning in a river of work.

Now the question of the hour…Who will win the highly anticipated match?!

Now, as a student, I have a slight bias, but I can put that aside. And for the sake of everyone suffering from the mid-December slump: we can all be winners.

I encourage all students to keep pushing through, study for your tests, complete your homework assignments, and give full attention to your teachers during class. And with that, very, very soon we will all be sleeping in until noon and binge-watching our favorite TV shows without a care in the world.

But I also encourage all teachers to be conscious of their students’ loaded schedules and attempt to be flexible with them.

Teachers and students need to work together in order to rise above the inevitable mid-December slump and make it to the 23rd! When we achieve this great feat, I can guarantee we will all be extremely grateful that we worked a little extra harder now, so that for the one and a half weeks we have off, school work will be the last thought to cross our minds.
