Battle of the Albums: Nothing Happens vs. Why No Why

Ava Maxwell, Sports Editor

If you’ve read some of my past articles, you would know that I often write articles comparing two albums from one artist, and, in the end, I choose which I think is better. However, in this Battle of the Albums, I’ll be comparing two albums from two different artists: Nothing Happens by the Wallows and Why No Why by Mob Rich. The most well-known song on Nothing Happens is “Are You Bored Yet?,” and on Why No Why, “Yoko Ono.” Although these two albums have different music styles, they are great contestants for Battle of the Albums.

Nothing Happens was released in 2019, contains an 11-song tracklist, and is about 40 minutes in length. Some of my favorite songs from this album are “Are You Bored Yet?,” “Scrawny,” and “Remember When.” The album has a vibe that reminds me of a band that got together in the 90’s and made music together in their garage. Just by how most of the songs on Nothing Happens sound, I can picture their music videos using a VHS camera filter. If you listen carefully to the tracklist of Nothing Happens in order, you can hear that the ending of the last song, “Do Not Wait,” slightly transitions into the beginning of the first song, “Only Friend,” but with a sped up tempo.

Why No Why was released earlier in this year on May 14th. The album has a 14-song tracklist and runs about 43 minutes in length. If you’ve watched the show Atypical, then you have most likely heard of the song “Yoko Ono” from one of the scenes in season 3. My favorite songs on Why No Why other than “Yoko Ono” are “Dandy Liars,” “Funeral,” and “friends*”. Personally, I think that Mob Rich’s music is different from other modern-day artists. I think their music can be classified as pop, but it has a unique sound and vibe.

For the first Battle of the Albums for this school year, which album wins? I think Why No Why takes the victory this round. Although I enjoy listening to both unique albums, Why No Why just has a different feel to it that I haven’t really found in any other album so far. I look forward to hopefully hearing new music from both Mob Rich and the Wallows in the future because I enjoy listening to both of their music styles.
