A wrong number leads to meeting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
December 11, 2021
Responsible for starting a group chat for his school’s basketball team, Vinny Tartaglia collected his teammates’ numbers and typed them into his phone. A one-digit mistake led to adding Sean Murphy-Bunting, a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to this chat. Rather than staying quiet while reading texts about ridesharing and practice, Murphy-Bunting decided to speak up: “Did you mean to add me to this group?”. A member of the Notre Dame Prep freshman boy’s basketball team responded, “Yes if this is *teammate’s name*”. “This is Sean. Do you know who I am?” Murphy-Bunting responded, following up with a picture of himself in the Buccaneer’s locker room. With some boys in disbelief, and others convinced that their teammate was pranking them, Sean Murphy-Bunting facetimed the doubtful group. Passing his phone around the locker room, the boys were then introduced to Leonard Fournette, Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski, Richard Sherman, and eventually Tom Brady. Before hanging up, Murphy-Bunting gave the group some advice, “Ball out this season”.
As exciting as this was for the basketball team, Murphy-Bunting admits he also enjoyed the call expressing, “That was fun. That was really fun. It was really good to see all those young kids hyped up.”
