THE ANXIETY Album Review

For the past few weeks, the song “Meet Me At Our Spot” has been trending on TikTok, but many of the people who have used this song for their TikTok likely haven’t listened to the album on which it’s featured. If you haven’t heard of “Meet Me At Our Spot,” it’s sung by Willow Smith and Tyler Cole, who together call themselves THE ANXIETY. The song appears on their debut album, also titled THE ANXIETY. Overall, the album consists of a 10-song tracklist and is about 30 minutes in length. Many of the songs that appear on THE ANXIETY relate to racial injustice and mental health issues, and some also feature Willow Smith’s touch of rock music.

Although the album consists of many upbeat songs, there are also a few songs that have a more relaxing vibe, like “Meet Me At Our Spot,” “Are You Afraid?” and “After You Cry.” Personally, my favorite songs off of this album are “Fight Club,” “Believe That,” and “After You Cry,” but overall, I enjoy all of the songs on the album. This album is also currently one of my favorites because many of the songs give me a boost of energy with their blood-pumping beats. Even though some people may think that “Meet Me At Our Spot” is overrated because they’re tired of hearing it all over their TikTok feed, I’ve had the song on repeat for over a month because of how catchy it is.

In my opinion, there isn’t a single song on THE ANXIETY that doesn’t deserve recognition. From my interpretation, “The System” focuses on racial injustice issues that people of color face because of the unequal government system in the country. The lyric, “They don’t try to coexist” touches on the fact that people are so resistant to everyone existing together while being treated equally. The song “Poolside” has also been interpreted as a metaphor for people not acknowledging the racial inequity that exists. I think the lyrics, “I don’t need to tell ‘em ‘cause they won’t understand” could also be a metaphor for not wanting to explain your own mental health to others because they might not understand what you’re going through. Another song that covers the topic of anxiety is “Are Your Afraid?” as it includes, “I can feel the time passing, that’s the anxiety attacking, and I’ve been through all the sad s**t,” refers to time flying by, but also feeling anxious that you’re running out of time.

THE ANXIETY is definitely one of my favorite albums at the moment. Not only have I been listening to the full tracklist almost everyday, but I constantly have “Meet Me At Our Spot” and “Fight Club” playing at full volume on repeat in my earbuds. If you haven’t given THE ANXIETY a listen yet, then I think you should because the songs have a deep meaning behind their lyrics as well as a catchy beat to keep you playing them on repeat.
