Schoolgirls Killed in Afghanistan
May 13, 2021
On May 8, three explosions killed at least 50 people and injured another 100 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The bombs were placed outside of the Sayed Shuhada high school and triggered as the female students headed home for the day. The girls and boys attended the school in shifts, so the attacks were targeting the schoolgirls.
The first bomb exploded within a minivan parked in front of the school and the other two weapons activated as others rushed to the scene. Parents frantically ran to find their daughters yet many failed to identify their own children among the sea of blood and rubble.
The motive behind this attack remains unknown. President Biden’s administration has recently ordered the full withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan before September 11th which has caused increased tension among the nation’s citizens as they fear further oppression of their rights.Â
No group has taken responsibility for the attack either. The Taliban announced that it held no part in the murder, and a spokesman from the Taliban tweeted that the Islamic State was behind it. Western Kabul traditionally contains large numbers of Shiite inhabitants, which has long been the cause of conflict among various Islamic groups. However, Afghanistan’s president, Ashraf Ghani, claims that the Taliban had initiated the bombings. Only time will reveal the truth behind this horrific event.
In recent years, the women of Afghanistan have been subject to ever-worsening treatment on behalf of radical religious organizations and an overall deranged society. While the rest of the world fought for more freedom, the citizens of various Middle Eastern countries have been continuously suppressed and drained of their basic human rights. Some other nations attempt to help, but their efforts often do no more than skim the surface of the true issues plaguing the societies. The only cure exists within internal unity.
