Caitlyn Jenner’s Governor Run Announcement and the Kardashian-Jenner Family’s Response

Caitlyn Jenner is a former Olympic gold medalist, transgender rights activist, and television personality. She also has six biological children: she shares Kylie and Kendall Jenner with ex Kris Jenner, Brandon and Brody Jenner with ex Linda Thompson, and Cassandra and Burt Jenner with ex Chrystie Jenner. She also developed relationships with Kris’ children with late ex-husband Robert Kardashian as well: Kim, Khloé, Kourtney, and Rob Kardashian.

After it was announced that Jenner would be running for the seat of California’s next governor, the Kardashian-Jenners have shown support for her, even if they may not agree politically. A source told PEOPLE that the family wants Jenner to be “happy” and if being a governor is what she wants to do, they will show their support no matter what.

Last Friday, the former Olympian revealed to the public that she’s running to hopefully take current Governor Gavin Newsom’s seat, writing “I’m in! California is worth fighting for” on her social media page. The last recall election occurred in 2003, but a GOP-fueled campaign recently obtained enough signatures around the state that Newsom will likely have to go through a recall election and challenge Jenner. Caitlyn Jenner told Axios, “for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the golden State reduced by one party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people.” Her campaign adviser spoke on her campaign describing her “as someone that’s socially liberal and fiscally conservative.” In 2016, Jenner fully supported Trump’s campaign and his presidency until Trump reversed federal rules that allegedly protected transgender individuals’ rights to use public restrooms. In a 2018 Washington Post op-ed, Jenner stated, “I thought Trump would help trans people…I was wrong.”

Caitlyn Jenner’s plan to run has created controversy due to the fact that she is with the Republican party as a transgender woman/activist for the community, even though the Republican party has a history of anti-LGBTQ policies. She has faced some criticism since she has never held public office and only voted in 9 out of 26 elections since 2000, according to L.A. County records. Jenner formed a campaign team with former President Trump’s advisers including top campaign pollster Tony Fabrizo, former White House communications adviser Steven Cheung, and former campaign manager Brad Parscale.
