How Abington Teachers and Students Spent their Spring Break
April 8, 2021
This year’s spring break was like no other. In past years, most people I know, including my own family, used to travel to fun places over the short week break and get adventurous outside our hometown and even the country, however, covid changed plans and forced many of us to get creative right from our own homes! My spring break was pretty simple: I spent a lot of time with family and friends by going to dinner, watching movies, and going shopping which was really nice and overall it was very fun!
I asked several of my teachers at Abington and some friends about how they spent their week and what they thought of it, and here are their responses:
Mrs. Robinson – Civics and Government Teacher
“Over spring break, I was able to visit with my family members down in Delaware since we are all newly vaccinated! My two sisters and I spent time walking our family dogs and hanging out outside in the nice weather. I also got time to catch up on some housework and did some home improvement projects and spring cleaning. The downtime was great to relax with family.”
Mr. Quigley – English Teacher
“My main goal for spring break was to stay away from computers, and I did a pretty good job! My time was spent mostly around fires and with family. I watched some Phillies games, played some music, and got in a round of golf before sliding back into Google Classroom. It’s hard to believe it is April!”
Mrs. Lindinger – Psychology Teacher
“I took some time off from school work and spent time with my family. After a year of being unable to gather and share meals together, the adults are finally all vaccinated. So, we were able to have brunch with my parents, sisters, and their new babies. I have a niece who is 8 months and a nephew who is 2 months. It was really special seeing my girls, Olivia and Elise, get to interact with their baby cousins!”
Mr. Viscariello – Science Teacher
“Over spring break, I spent a lot of time planting gardens because I created greenhouses! I planted many seeds, peppers, tomatoes, veggies, etc.”
Frau Eichler – German Teacher
“I drove to Ithaca, NY with my family and stayed in a bed-and-breakfast. This was definitely not a tropical getaway, since it snowed on April 1st! We hiked several gorges and waterfalls, saw the Cornell and Ithaca campuses, and explored the town of Ithaca. Our favorite meals were the gourmet breakfasts (homemade yogurt & quiche!) and the Ramen dishes we had at a restaurant in town. I also slept a lot and felt recharged to face the 4th quarter!”
Mrs. Colletto – Math Teacher
“This spring break was spent at home enjoying time with my family. We went on a long family bike ride, set up our projector screen in the back yard to watch NCAA basketball games and Phillies games, and had fire pits in the backyard (my kids love to pop jiffy pop over the fire pit and they roasted Peeps too). My son had a basketball tournament and my older daughter had her first fastpitch travel softball game over the weekend. Overall a great relaxing weekend, but ‘spring break’ always goes by too fast! I am looking forward to the nice warm weather and more time up at the ball fields coaching my kids this spring.”
Mrs. Bucci – Spanish Teacher
“My spring break was pretty relaxing and I got to spend a lot of time with my family which was very nice!”
Katya Hulayev – 10th Grade
“During this spring break, I got to sleep in a lot. I got to hang out with my two friends and we went to the park that is near my house. I also read a lot of manga, and on my last day [of break], I went to see my cousin to hang out for a little while!
Alyssa Nguyen – 10th Grade
“I spent my spring break with my family most of the time. We wanted to bond more so we set aside most of our electronic devices and we spent time playing board games or going out together. I’m thankful I got to spend the break with the people I love!”
Emma Brown – 10th Grade
“For spring break, my family and I were supposed to go to the outer banks for a smaller intimate family wedding but we all got COVID tested before we went and everyone in my family came back negative except my dad, so the health department said we couldn’t go to the wedding. Everyone in my family was really sad because we had this trip planned for a while and we thought it was a false positive because my mom, sister, and I all tested negative. We stayed home instead of going (to the wedding) and my dad got two more coronavirus tests to see if it really was a false positive… and both came back negative! The health department declared my dad had a false positive and we ended up staying home for nothing, however after we confirmed that we were all safe and negative, we actually ended up having a really fun time just with the four of us – and we made the best of it!”
Anna Quinto – 10th Grade
“I thought it was nice to have a break from the stress of school to celebrate the holiday (Easter)! When I wasn’t working, I got to safely spend time with family which was nice! School takes up a lot of my time so using those hours to get some rest and be with others was very much needed.”
Enoch Abdikarimov – 11th Grade
“I spent the start of the short break with my family. I went to Long Island to visit my cousins and after coming home, I took time for myself to relax and also hang out with a few friends. The break was short but was still eventful.
Lucy Tyler – 10th Grade
“I really appreciated the quick break, and I tried not to waste it. I tried to fill my days with a balance of plans and relaxation. There isn’t much to do in lockdown but I tried to make the best of it!”
Joyce Ahn – 10th Grade
“This year, my spring break was very relaxing and it was nice to have a short break from school. I spent time with family and friends and cooked delicious foods with my mom. I also watched a few movies during the break. My favorite was a movie I watched with a friend titled Safety. It was a heart-touching film based on a true story about a football player and the struggles he faced trying to raise his younger brother while balancing school and his sport. Overall, my spring break was an enjoyable couple of days to unwind and be stress-free.”
Sofia Shagas – 10th Grade
“Over this spring break, I took some time off for myself. I got a chance to catch up with my mental and physical health. Most of my friends were gone for vacation, so I was mostly at home. I went on many walks and spent a lot of time in parks. Walking outside relieves my anxiety, so I was very relaxed most of spring break. I rewatched the first season of Gossip Girl and started a new podcast on Spotify. I had a very relaxing break, and I am sad it came to an end so soon.”
Joey Ehly – 10th Grade
“I spent my spring break sleeping in and hanging out with my friends. I’ve also been skateboarding a lot more since the weather’s getting nicer. It’s nice to have a longer break every couple of weeks.”
Marley Hollister – 10th Grade
“I went to Virginia with my family over break and we went to the Shenandoah Valley area where we went on some nice hikes and just enjoyed nature. I’m happy it’s spring because I really love the warm weather and all the pretty trees and flowers bloom.”
