What’s the Deal with Jade Rollers?

Phoebe Lee, Writer

Recently, jade rollers have become extremely popular online for their facial benefits and de-puffing abilities. A jade roller is a beauty tool made from jades or other stones used for facial massages. The tool has been around since the seventh century in China, but it recently blew up all over social media causing many people to try the trend.

Benefits of a jade roller:

  • Tightens pores
  • Increases circulation
  • Jumpstarts lymphatic drainage
  • Relieves tension in the face and neck
  • Smooths and soothes the skin
  • Provides a deep tissue massage
  • Helps with even product distribution
  • Decrease inflammation and redness
  • Helps the face get more nutrients and oxygen

How to use a jade roller:

  1. Prep your skin by applying your favorite serum or night cream on your skin.
  2. Begin with your neck and move upwards with gentle pressure. Make sure you target the sides of your neck, right under your jawline.
  3. Transition to your face by starting on either side of your nose, pushing outwards as you roll towards your hairline. Don’t press too hard or the jade could break and leave tiny red marks on your face.
  4. To increase blood flow in your cheeks, you only really need to use the face roller for 5 minutes, but to get a full massage, 10 minutes is plenty of time.
  5. Clean your roller! This is very important. If you used your roller to apply moisturizer or serums, you’ll want to sanitize your roller with soapy water before you put it away for later use. Squirt some gentle soap or baby shampoo onto the stone, then roll it under warm water. Finally, roll it out on a towel to dry

Jade rollers are naturally cold and made to be kept cold. Placing cold, safe objects on your face, such as a cold spoon, de-puffs your face. People also suggest that jade rollers also produce a “facelift” due to how drastically using a face roller can change your face shape. However, there isn’t too much research done behind that claim. According to Justine Kluk, a dermatologist, “jade rollers may also form part of a soothing, feel-good ritual to reduce stress, and high-stress levels can aggravate skin conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis. In these ways, jade rollers may indirectly deliver benefits to skin wellbeing.” She continues by saying, “There is no good quality scientific research to support many of the claims directly. For example, I am not sure that using a jade roller aids absorption of products any more than smoothing thoroughly with clean fingertips… However, if they are a step towards better self-care and aid compliance with a skincare routine, I don’t see the harm in using one.”

Face rolling can be done from any location. Whether you’re in the car or at a work event, you’ll see results nearly immediately. You can face roll on clean dry skin, with special skincare products, and even over your makeup. After use, your face should feel less tense and more relaxed, which will help de-puff, circulate, and soothe your face/skin.
