Roseanne Park, commonly known as Rosé, is an extremely talented Korean singer and performer. She was born in New Zealand and later moved to Australia, where her dad was a successful lawyer. She auditioned to be a trainee for YG Entertainment at the age of 15 after her dad realized his daughter was meant to be a singer. Four years later (2016), she debuted in what is now one of the biggest girl bands in the world: Blackpink.

Blackpink consists of four girls: Jisoo Kim, Jennie Kim, Rosé Park, and Lisa Manoban. The girls are not only skilled performers, but they have caught the attention of many after being appointed as ambassadors of luxury brands: Jisoo – Dior, Jennie – Chanel, Rosé – YSL, and Lisa – Celine. Jisoo is the oldest and is also a well-known actress. Jennie is the group’s main rapper and known for her charm on stage. Rosé is the main vocalist and known for her authentic, unique voice. Lisa, the youngest, is known for being one of the top dancers in the industry.

On their main Youtube channel, they have over 12 billion views and are the most subscribed female entertainers, accumulating over 58 million subscribers. They’re known for their amazing music videos, unbelievable stadium concerts, and personalities from their reality show “Blackpink House.” With only two full albums and several singles, they’ve managed to become incredibly popular all over the world. They’ve collaborated with popular artists such as Cardi B, Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, and Lady Gaga. They have also gotten support from celebrities like Ariana Grande, the One Direction members, Kendall Jenner, Drake, Gigi Hadid, Justin Bieber, Halsey, and more! They’ve performed at Coachella, on James Corden, on Jimmy Fallon, and on Good Morning America.

Rosé is the second member from Blackpink to come out with a solo (after Jennie Kim) and the first one with her own EP. On March 12th, she came out with two tracks:

  1. On The Ground
  2. Gone

While “Gone” didn’t come with a music video after the release, “On The Ground” did and it was extremely successful. Within the first 24 hours, the video had hit over 39 million views, 6 million likes, and over a million comments. I watched it the morning of the release and I thought it was astounding. Her voice is definitely something different and it’s gained the attention of many music producers, like Diplo, because of its originality. Rosé’s slightly raspy yet delicate tone creates amazing music, and “On The Ground” is a perfect example of that.

Rosé’s approach to both tracks on this EP of hers is brought in a softer approach and she takes things back to basics, eliminating the often busier and louder layers found on her group’s songs. She carries out drama and emotion in powerful melodies, which I admire. In an interview Rosé did before the official release, she shares the backstory and true meaning of the song. She mentions that in the video where you see two of her, it’s supposed to represent her looking back at her old self. She also talks about realizing everything she thinks she wants or she needs is actually with her. The sacrifice that comes with her goals is a prominent message throughout the song as well. Overall, the EP deserves all the hype it’s getting! Rosé isn’t afraid to be creative and show new sides of herself to the world. The connection she builds between her music and herself is very visible, meaningful, and genuine. I definitely recommend checking out these songs as well as her new music video to “On The Ground” and of course, Blackpink’s too!
