Rating Super Bowl LV Commercials

Ava Maxwell, Writer

Let’s be real here, there are two types of people who watch the Super Bowl: those who watch for the football, and those who watch for the commercials/halftime show. I happen to be one of the latter but in my opinion, I think the commercials have gotten less entertaining in the past few years. Because of everything that has happened in the past year, many advertisers are changing up the way their commercials are presented. That being said, here are my thoughts on some of the commercials that were shown during this year’s Super Bowl.

Bud Light/Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade

Bud Light is known for their action-packed Super Bowl advertisements which is why I really enjoyed watching this year’s commercial. I thought it was really cool to see all of the Bud Light ‘legends’ come together and help clean up the boxes that fell out of the truck. In another commercial, the brand also promoted their new product, Bud Light Seltzer Lemonade. I thought the commercial was funny, and I really enjoyed the reference to the “when life gives you lemons” saying.

Cheetos

Everyone knows that when you eat Cheetos, you end up with orange dust on your fingers that gets everywhere. I thought the idea of remaking Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me” and featuring him in the commercial was amazing. Even the little details of having Cheeto dust fingerprints added to the humor of the advertisement.

Doordash

The Doordash commercial featuring the characters of Sesame Street was one of my favorite commercials during the game. I really liked how they portrayed food delivery while also supporting the local and small businesses found in your own neighborhood. The fact that Doordash is donating $1 for every order made between February 7th and 8th to Sesame Workshop made the commercial even better.

Doritos

In past years, Doritos has been known for their odd, yet funny, commercials shown during the Super Bowl. This year, they turned Matthew McConaughey into a 2-dimensional person and at the end of the commercial, he became 3-dimensional again by eating Doritos 3D chips. Although the commercial was a little odd, I still enjoyed watching it and I especially liked seeing Mindy Kaling, who plays Kelly Kapoor from The Office.

Paramount

Paramount’s commercial was different from any other Super Bowl commercial I’ve ever seen. To promote their upcoming streaming service, Paramount+, the network brought together actors and actresses from their shows and made a series of commercials showing them climbing the Paramount mountain. This series of commercials was my favorite from the night because not only did I recognize plenty of familiar faces, but in the last segment of the commercial, Paramount inserted a clip from Spongebob that many people hoped to see in the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show. I thought this was a great touch to the commercial because we didn’t get to see the segment in 2019.

Even though the football game is supposed to be the main source of entertainment, the commercials are always a nice touch to the night whether or not you pay attention to the game itself. These were just a few commercials from Super Bowl LV, and there were many more that I thought were great such as the advertisements for Miracle Grow, Tide, and Toyota. I think the commercials this year were slightly better than past Super Bowls, but they just aren’t like they used to be.
