The Meaning of Life

Shaylyn Lambert, Writer

What is the meaning of life? That is the universal question everyone asks themselves at least once in their lifetime. Per the Oxford Dictionary, life is “the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.” To answer the golden question, people first must need to recognize and understand the meaning of death. Physical death is when the heart stops beating which stops blood flow throughout the body. The absence of nutrients and oxygen in the blood causes the brain cells to die off to the point where the body can no longer support itself independently. Some people think the meaning of life is to simply grow up and get a job to pay taxes and buy necessities such as food and water. However, I think that is too straightforward. There was one interesting case about a person who was almost paralyzed completely. They argued that waking up, eating, and sleeping was not a proper way to live life to its fullest potential. Thus, there is real-world evidence to show that there is more to life than just carrying out basic everyday tasks. I believe the meaning of life is to grow and develop into the best version of yourself. People change throughout their life and ideally the more life experiences a person gains, the more wisdom they acquire so they do not make the same mistakes as their younger self. This meaning is entirely at the mercy of an individual’s choices they make willingly throughout their life.
