Phillies Re-Sign Realmuto

The overdue announcement has arrived!  The Phillies have finally decided to re-sign catcher, J.T. Realmuto to a five-year $115.5 million contract.

Realmuto was originally traded to the Phillies in 2019 and given a contract through the 2020 season under former Phillies’ manager, Gabe Kapler.  In the 2019 season, Realmuto was an all-star and earned the Rawlings NL Golden Glove along with a few other achievements.  From the beginning, it was clear Realmuto would bring a new spark that the team desperately needed.  However, when the 2020 season ended, Realmuto became a free agent.  The Phillies began planning for alternative options in case they were unable to re-sign their star catcher.  Fans and teammates, realizing how great of a player Realmuto is, ridiculed management when they had not come out with a deal by the end of the 2020 season.

During the 2020 Summer Camp and regular season, Bryce Harper, Phillies’ outfielder and one of Realmuto’s biggest supporters, took many opportunities to point out that J.T. should be re-signed.  Obviously, the team is still not perfect. The Phillies really need to step up their bullpen and develop their pitchers, but retaining Realmuto was critical for any postseason hopes the team had.

Last season, the Phillies had a record of 28-32 and finished third in the National League East division.  However, if the team brings their A-game this season and refines their pitchers and infield, they may have a chance at earning a spot in the playoffs.
