Rodrigo-Bassett-Carpenter Love Triangle
January 24, 2021
Speculations have arisen that there is drama in a new love triangle between Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, and Sabrina Carpenter.
Rodrigo released her first-ever single, “Drivers License,” on January 8th. The song hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts within a week. In an interview with Billboard, Rodrigo addressed rumors of her song being about her ex-boyfriend and old High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star, Joshua Bassett. Rodrigo said the lyrics of “Drivers License” are “super vulnerable and raw,” which scared and discouraged her from releasing it as her debut song since “it was like, [her] deepest insecurities in a four-minute song.” After listening to the song, people could automatically recognize it was a post-breakup song and speculated it was about her break up with Bassett. In the song, Rodrigo says, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt.” Since Bassett has been rumored to be dating singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter, people believe the “blonde girl” is referring to her. Also, fans who listened to the demo of this song noticed this part was different from the original version. It used to be “You’re probably with that brunette girl / The one I always thought about,” suggesting that Rodrigo changed the lyric. However, she dismissed any rumors by commenting to Billboard, “I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song… It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important.”
Almost a week after “Drivers License” dropped, Bassett subsequently released the first song of his upcoming debut EP, Joshua Bassett, called “Lie Lie Lie.” Many fans believe that this song could be his response to Rodrigo’s song. They both created ballads, but the two songs are completely opposite stylistically and emotionally to each other. When the song was released on January 14th, Bassett wrote on his Instagram that “I wrote, ‘Lie, Lie, Lie’ after I found out a friend has been lying about me behind my back for a long time.” If his song is actually referring to Rodrigo and her song, then Bassett is just trying to escalate the situation for the press so he can get his name in the tabloids.
On January 22nd, Carpenter released “Skin,” the first single from her upcoming fifth studio album. The song was a surprise release announced by Sabrina on her Twitter and Instagram the day before it dropped. Carpenter used “Skin” as a message to people who hated her for allegedly being with Bassett, but many believe it is her response to Rodrigo’s song since she directly addresses Rodrigo in the lyrics of the song. In all honesty, “Skin” is a petty response to “Drivers License.” In the first verse of the song, Carpenter sings, “Maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme.” Carpenter deliberately uses this line to suggest Rodrigo’s “blonde” line was not changed just to rhyme, but also to diss her. Then in the second verse, it says, “You’re putting me in the spotlight / But I’ve been under it all my life.” This is in response to people saying Carpenter only became famous because of all the arising drama with Rodrigo. She flexes on Rodrigo, suggesting she has had a much longer career due to her lead role on the Disney television show Girl Meets World and her four studio albums. Even the chorus, “You can try / To get under my, under my, under my skin / While hе’s on mine / Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin” is basically rubbing it in Rodrigo’s face that Carpenter thinks she won because she has Bassett. Carpenter ends the song with “I just hope that one day / We both can laugh about it / When it’s not in our face,” trying to show that the phrase “sisters before misters” still stands true despite her many attacks towards Rodrigo. In my opinion, the song as a whole did not need to be released and only fueled the already overpublicized alleged love triangle.
It’s clear Olivia Rodrigo had a messy break up with Joshua Bassett, who is now supposedly dating Sabrina Carpenter. People are overdramatizing it by overanalyzing every little detail in their newest songs to build a feud between young artists.
