The First Female General Manager in MLB
December 25, 2020
Last month, the Miami Marlins baseball team hired Kimberly Ng as the team’s new general manager. Derek Jeter, a former Yankees player and owner of the Marlins organization, won three World Series titles with Ng as the assistant general manager, which certainly heavily influenced his hiring of her. Ng started her profession in the major leagues 30 years ago in 1990. While with the Yankees as MLB’s youngest assistant general manager, Ng won three World Series titles between 1998 and 2001. Not only is Ng the first female general manager in major league baseball, but she is also the highest-ranking woman in the league. In the past, Ng has worked as an intern, in the front offices, and alongside many other MLB teams such as the Dodgers, Padres, and White Sox.
Although she has been qualified for a general manager position for over 15 years, many teams have passed on hiring a female in such a male-dominated position. Not only has Ng overcome sexism within the league, but also faced racism for being an Asian-American. At her introductory press conference, Ng told reporters, “It made me realize that it really was a glimmer of hope and inspiration for so many.” Ng is setting many examples for women who hope to take similar steps into the MLB, and other professional sports leagues around the world. The Marlins ended the adjusted 2020 season with a 31-29 record; finishing in second place in the National League East division. With the 2021 spring training season scheduled to start in just a few months, it should be interesting to see what Ng has in store for the Miami Marlins.
